So I’ve been doing a lot of contemplating on whats next for Mr. The Engineer’s garage. I’ve contemplated Maseratis, Bentleys, Vipers and Vettes, even eyed a few 997 turbos..

As much as I love cars like this, the upkeep and insurance tends to be astronomical (see any post about my Ferrari).

Recently I have been contemplating making this bad decision of selling the Ferrari (thats happening one way or the other) and possibly the Fiat, and replacing them with good, old fashion, reliable, maintenance free, rotary engine cars. Such as an FD RX7 and a Eunos Cosmo 20b.

These of course would be in addition to the miata and the Jeep, and also possibly an R32...

A Cosmo or Silvia would be cool just for the novelty, but seem like they wouldn’t be great to drive. And I think the FDs have earned a bit too much of a boy racer vibe, and it’ll be tough to find one unmolested.

Upkeep on the Viper is pretty cheap (other than tires). If you have other cars, insurance is pretty cheap too.

If you want something different I would definitely peruse Japanese auctions there is always something awesome just sitting there and a lot of it is so cheap. The only problem I can see with that is if it was exclusively a Japanese market car and all parts had to be shipped from Japan.

Logic be damned, if you have you have the capability to own an FD Rx7, just make it happen. If I could have any car in the world, super cars and crazy 1000 horsepower things included, it would be an Rx7 hands down. Definitely not maintenance free but that is just part of the joy in ownership. Once I can have more than one car and live somewhere without salt on the roads, I will have one of these.

Actually on a side note... I am thinking of selling my hardtail (I’ve rode it once in the past 18 months...) and using that to buy, at least part of, an RSV4 RR

My biggest hurdle with insurance is that on my main policy I have 3 cars, 2 motorcycles, and a house. The company that all that is through, will not insure high end, exotic type stuff, like the Ferrari, so I had to go out and get a separate policy for that, with no discounts.

The only thing stopping me from an FD-RX7 is the endless stream of $$ I would pour into it (by choice!). Ended up in a great platform with less modding potential to keep me away from limitless upgrades and focus more on driving experiences.
